Avalung II Sling

There are also a number of specifically designed winter backcountry packs that come with a built-in AvaLung.

Many people feel that while the AvaLung is ideal for within-bounds and tree skiing, riders on large open slopes above treeline are better off using an Avalanche Airbag. Some people own both.

Avalanche Airbag Pack

An Avalanche Airbag Pack, sometimes referred to as an Avalanche Balloon Pack, is an inflatable bag that is stored inside a specially designed backpack that also holds other avalanche safety gear as well as personal items. It is deployed by pulling on a handle located where it is easily reached, near one shoulder. Airbag packs are seeing increasing use by guiding companies and other professionals who spend considerable time in avalanche terrain. The snowmobile community and a few hardcore riders are also using them.

There are now two basic systems on the market that inflate the airbag once the trigger is pulled: the original refillable compressed-air cylinder; and a system using a lithium ion battery-powered fan that will inflate the bag several times on a single charge. Though more expensive initially, the latter system avoids having to recharge cylinders and the packs are more acceptable to airlines. They also allow you to practise with the airbag so you know what to expect if you ever have to use it.
